**Found this when looking through some drafts of old posts. For some reason I never got around to posting this. This is from last January**

Reason #346 why I practice parkour-based functional fitness: Getting locked out of your second story condo because you’re a dumb ass and left your keys inside when you took out your dog.

Now, I didn’t have to do a 12 foot wall-climb or anything flashy to get in my condo. I simply climbed on top of the railing surrounding the balcony on the ground floor, jumped to the bottom of my balcony, and then pulled myself up and performed a turn-vault over my railing. See, nothing terribly exciting (was contemplating a wall-climb but my laziness in the morning left me wearing slip-on dress shoes) but it worked.

As I was running back downstairs to get my dog (keys in hand) I felt pretty good about the situation. Yes, I’d spent about 35 minutes outside in well-below freezing weather, and I ended up being late for work; but the fact that I was able to use parkour and functional fitness in such a practical way was incredibly liberating. I thought to myself, this is why I train.

In retrospect, the fact that I was able to physically perform the movements necessary to get on my balcony isn’t what really shocks me. It is the fact that I was supremely confident in my ability to perform those movements. Particularly as I hung 10 feet in the air prior to climbing over my railing. I’ve been saying this for a while now, and its completely true: progression leads to confidence.

Don’t take this post as a recommendation that you should always climb over balconies. I spent about 25 minutes deciding on whether or not it would be safe for me to do this, I checked all railings for stability, and knew that I wasn’t doing anything out of my skill set. Additionally, I knew that even if I fell, the ground and environment surrounding my balcony would allow me to safety roll.
